Justin Lin Has Some Interesting Things To Say About Star Trek Beyond

Like who exactly is responsible for that divisive title.

Justin Lin sat down for an interview at Paramount Studios to discuss Star Trek Beyond as part of a roundtable for which Collider was present. It's lengthy, and at times overly-vague (as these things tend to be months before the release of a large tentpole movie), but there are some interesting nuggets divulged by Lin - who is responsible for turning the Fast & Furious franchise into the lucrative behemoth it has become. Lin made it clear that characters like Khan and Carol Marcus would not be mentioned in the third instalment of the franchise, with the crew of the Enterprise now being about halfway through their five-year mission and well past the events of Star Trek Into Darkness. When asked about leaving the previous entry in the series behind, Lin said:
"I don€™t know if we€™re leaving it behind, and definitely have spent some time on that. But you know at the same time I feel like Star Trek has been around 50 years and I€™m excited to be a part of it but I€™m also excited to be a participant but hopefully to see where it€™s gonna go, and I think every filmmaker that comes on has a different point of view and it€™s a big universe."
He also gave a little info as to how they stumbled across their title;
"...the more we talked about it the more we kept saying, €œWell, let€™s keep pushing, let€™s keep pushing,€ and that€™s when Simon kinda said, €œWell, it should be Star Trek Beyond,€ and it was his idea... and then we looked at each other and like, €œOh! That sounds like the title of this film.€
The best part of the interview is definitely where he cops to 3D for the Fast & Furious franchise being a money-grab, and being hesitant to do that. It's nice to hear a prolific director rail against an industry standard. Unfortunately he has changed his tune when it comes to Star Trek Beyond, as he feels that "especially with space and the depth, I think you get a different experience going 3D, so it€™s definitely been kind of designed into it." How do you feel about Justin Lin as the director of Star Trek now that he's been able to speak more about it? Let us know in the comments. Star Trek Beyond is released on 22 July 2016.
