Looper: 20 Mistakes Rian Johnson Should Have Avoided

20. Uncannily Willis

So, in the movie, JGL is supposed to be Willis, just thirty years younger. This wasn't so much of a problem with me as it was with others that reviewed the movie. The make-up that makes JGL look more like a younger Bruce Willis didn't quite work for them. It's uncanny, not quite the genuine article. Part of the problem is that we all know what Willis looked like thirty-years ago from the Die-Hard movies and Moonlighting, and the other is the make-up used can be a little distracting. Listen, we've had to buy weirder older-younger self pairings before (I especially love the one in Guide to Recognizing Your Saints where we have to buy that Shia LeBeouf is a younger Robert Downey Jr...) and JGL looks alright for the part without the makeup. Just the colour contacts would've been enough, and as an audience we would buy the rest.
