One of the finest working television directors has signed on to helm a new feature for Legendary Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emmy award-winning filmmaker Jack Bender will direct the mysterious thriller, known only at this point as Devolution. While specific intel is fairly tight-lipped, the known facts are these:
Devolution is an original concept from author Max Brooks of World War Z fame, and David Leslie Johnson, screenwriter known for Orphan, Wrath of the Titans, and some episodes of The Walking Dead.
Bender directed 37 episodes of Lost’s most acclaimed hourlongs, including most season premieres and finales. He’s also directed episodes of Alcatraz, Alias, The Sopranos, and Carnivàle and is routinely thought of as the best TV director in the business. He’s been ready for a jump to feature films for a while and was previously attached to direct the Jack Ryan film Moscow, before it was put on hold.
Given the background attached to the project as well as its title, it’s assumed that Devolution will be a genre piece. Regardless of its focus, it will certainly exciting to see what Bender does with the scope of a feature film, as much of his television work has been as cinematic as the small screen gets.
Expect to hear more about Devolution’s development and an assuredly cryptic viral marketing campaign, if not its plot.
