Love Gets Savage in Oliver Stone's Latest Thriller

The Trailer

http://youtu.be/KC2zbOwbeEs Lets face it- you could give any nimrod a camera and some gorgeous actors and they could make Laguna Beach look cool- the place just exudes charisma and you can be instantly sucked into believing that anybody who lives there must have an exciting life. Perfect setting then for a story of this nature is it not? But seriously, a lot of the footage from the trailer looks beautifully shot and has a real edge to it- I'm reminded of films like True Romance. It seems that Stone certainly hasn't shied away from sex and violence here and early reviews inform us that there is no shortage of nudity in the film either. But who are the Savages here? Is it the omnipotent super-rich cartels and their lack of respect for life- or the easy-going dudes desperate to get their girl back? As this TV spot tells us - men of peace will go to war- and it seems they will pull out all the stops too. One of the brilliant aspects of the official trailer for me is the budding bromance between Kitsch and Johnson who look great as the central besties who think so damn much of each other that they even share a girlfriend. They look brilliant together and despite it seeming like an unlikely casting they both look perfect for the role. Johnson has certainly grown up from his wannabe super-hero days in Kick-Ass and I doubt many would disagree with me when I say that Kitsch fares better as an ex-Navy SEAL pot dealer than he does an inter-planetary civil war soldier. Its also nice to see Hayek back at her best- I've always thought she is better as a villain; the trailer surely raises high hopes about the intensity of her character and knowing how adept Stone is at pulling the best performances out of his actors I'm sure we can expect great things from her here. If the trailer isnt enough to convince you of the visual brilliance of this film feast your eyes upon some of the downloadable content from the official website, including ultra cool character wallpapers and facebook cover photos. Universal Pictures are clearly ticking all the marketing boxes with this one and are intent on making us believe that this film will be even better than it looks. But beyond its aesthetic brilliance is their a captivating story here? I would wager that there is; the trailer certainly proves that we have a whole host of interesting characters- if nothing else I would love to know how the unconventional 3 way relationship works out between Ben, Chon and Ophelia- does she ultimately choose one over the other? It wasnt long after the release of Don Winslow's best-selling novel in Autumn 2010, that Stone put up his own money to give the films adaptation the green light. Winslow was on board as co-writer and Stone also co wrote and produce. He certainly had a lot of faith in his vision for the project and must have known how to spin it well to get such great talent attached so quickly. The film premiered in America this week and has already had a host of positive reviews, many claiming that Stone is back on form and exercising some of his cinematic brilliance to take this story beyond what may be expected from fans of the genre. Here in the UK we have to hold out until the 28th September but rest assured, it is likely to stay high up on our hype meters until then.

A movie lover like no other Chelsey has the likes of Hobo With a Shotgun sitting side by side with Hitchcock, Survival of the Dead next to Shakespeare. Of course she has a soft spot for horror and has been consuming all manner of the blood-thirsty and undead for as long as she can remember but also appreciates every aspect of global movie-making. Just don't get her started on Michael Bay- or Nicolas Cage......
