After the relative disaster of Thor: The Dark World, which is widely deemed the very worst MCU movie, Thor needed a reconfiguration. He was doing well in the Avengers movies, but there was a commitment to making him a little too earnest in his own movies that just wasn't working as well. Then came Taika Waititi and everything changed.

The comedy director unshackled his lead, giving Chris Hemsworth more comedy material and while the stakes in Ragnarok are huge (and literally world ending), it's one of the more light-hearted in tone of the entire MCU. That is absolutely to its credit and it remains one of the most rewatchable MCU movies so far.

The moment when Thor is reunited with Hulk in the Sakaar arena was so great that the marketing company behind Ragnarok's trailers decided to spoil way too much of it in the marketing. It's entirely forgivable, of course, because it wasn't all that important to the story,

The scene was even more special too, because the line in which Thor calls Hulk "a friend from work" was suggested to Chris Hemsworth by a Make-A-Wish child who visited the set during filming.

It wasn't the only off-the-cuff moment either. Taika Waititi later revealed that a massive amount of the film was actually improvised: "I would say we improvised probably 80 percent of the film, or ad-libbed and threw in stuff."
