Mission Impossible: Fallout - 18 WTF Moments

18. The Cheesy Nightmare Sequences

Fallout opens by explaining one of the most baffling images from the movie's trailers: why the hell were Ethan (Tom Cruise) and Julia (Michelle Monaghan) appearing to get married with Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) as the priest?

As it turns out, this is in fact a nightmare, with Ethan dreaming that he and Julia are marrying all while Lane mutates the usual wedding scripture into a series of taunts about how he routinely places Julia in danger.

The sequence ends with a nuclear bomb going off, obliterating the two and foreshadowing both the central plutonium core plot and Julia ending up in danger in act three. We also get another brief nightmare sequence mid-way through the movie, with Ethan dreaming of Lane capturing Julia in Paris.

Honestly, these sequences are pretty corny and feel like pure cutting room floor material in a movie that otherwise makes so many smart choices.
