Morgan Freeman Joins Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Blockbuster Oblivion

Tron Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski directs adaptation of his own sci-fi comic series, coming to theaters July 19th, 2013.

Morgan Freeman is joining Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko in Tron Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski's new sci-fi blockbuster. The film is based on Kosinski's own comic series Oblivion at Radical Publishing, but Universal Pictures can't seem to decide on a title and have referred to it both as Oblivion and by another name, Horizons. At this point the film is going by the title Oblivion. No word yet on Freeman's role but Deadline reports that it is 'critical' to the story and it will be the first time Cruise & Freeman, two of the biggest names of the past twenty five years of film, share the same screen (though Freeman did narrate Cruise's War of the Worlds in 2005). The original comic book is described as follows; In a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jack discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows. Cruise plays Jack, Kurylenko his wife and Riseborough a mystery woman who arrives on the planet. Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt is re-writing the screenplay that both The Departed's William Monahan and Dead Like Me's Karl Gajdusek have had separate cracks at. The film has recently been set a July 19th, 2013 summer tentpole release date.
