Mother! Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

2. It's Totally Predictable

Predictability alone won't sink most films, because the execution of an idea is always more important, but it's still disappointing that Mother! is at its core an incredibly predictable romp.

Certain images and ideas that are raised early on hint very explicitly at how the scenario is going to conclude, and if you're paying a decent amount of attention, you'll be able to see the ending coming a mile off.

Again, the audacity of Aronofsky's style does somewhat soften this blow, but it's still a shame that certain visuals unnecessarily shown off in the first few minutes are needlessly spoilerific.

It would've been more compelling and surprising had Aronofsky withheld these glimpses, which he certainly could've done without appearing to excessively manipulate viewers.
