Mother's Day 2013: 10 Movies For Guys To Watch With Their Mums

steel m With it being Mother's Day in the US I felt it was the perfect time to help you fellas out with a little something to make your mother feel special. She DID give birth to you after all so the least you could do is spend a little time with her. This, unfortunately comes with a caveat: your tastes are most definitely NOT in line. Shopping for the perfect gift can be a no-win situation and flowers are so been-there-done-that, especially when all she really wants is to spend some time with her baby boy. What to do? How about watch a movie or two, her choice. Let's clarify: her choice from a list that you'll be able to hand her. All movies on this list will have been vetted and approved for the two of you. She truly would like nothing better than to sit down and watch, Steel Magnolias but that cannot happen. Oh man, I know I'm not watching that movie -- a compromise must be struck. No, sappy-sappy love-fest and no, Nude Nuns With Big Guns (actual movie). I'll find you ten movies that the two of you will love and everyone will go home happy. She'll be glad for the time with her son and you'll be glad that you still have your man card.

10. The Princess Bride

the princess brideWhy you'll love it: You're kidding right? Any guy at least thirty and above knows this movie by heart. Any guy under thirty with an older brother ALSO knows this movie by heart. If that leaves any of you shrugging, wondering what I'm talking about then either go buy this movie immediately or skip ahead -- you're a lost soul. One of the great adventure movies of all time, The Princess Bride features whip smart dialog, epic battles and magic. Cary Elwes does his best imitation of a Pirate Indiana Jones, Andre the Freaking Giant, and of course, Mandy "my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" Patinkin. It's smart, funny, full of grand gestures and the princess gets rescued. Everything to remind you why you loved movies. Why mom will love it: Did I mention Mandy Patinkin? He's kind of awesome in this but the love story is what will make mom swoon. A man stopping at nothing to rescue the woman he loves is a home run. Every time. You also get the conceit that it's all a story being ready to a young Fred Savage (your mother will claim him as adorable) by his loving grandfather, played by Columbo himself, Peter Falk. Throw in a hysterical cameo by Billy Crystal and mom will most definitely be happy. Anything less than this would be, INCONCEIVABLE!

I'm married and live in New York with my wife and pets. I'm a writer and definitely not a comedian (just ask my wife). I've successfully linked my twitter, goodreads, facebook and google+ pages although the successful aspect of all that is up for debate. I also started my own blog on wordpress and have just finished my first novel, The Violent Winds. Now it's time to try and trick some unsuspecting fool into buying it.
