Move Over Marvel - Netflix Are Making A Star Wars TV Series

Three, in fact.

Normally there'd be some set-up context here before getting to the meat of the news, but this is so exciting I'm just going to drop it right here - NETFLIX ARE GOING TO MAKE THREE STAR WARS SERIES! This is seriously awesome - you'd think after all the faultless movie announcements (well, aside from Colin Trevorrow taking on Episode IX) and the awesome-looking Battlefront there'd be no way Star Wars could get more exciting, but Disney keep wowing us. The news comes from Cinelinx, who actually reported last week about a live-action show, just without the attached network. Given Lucasfilm's parent company Disney already have a deal with Netflix, producing Marvel series and using the platform to distribute the final season of the cancelled Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this isn't too surprising. A live-action Star Wars series has been on the cards for a long time. Way back when Revenge Of The Sith was making its bow in cinemas George Lucas was talking about wanting to make an epic, multi-season show that expanded the dark times between trilogies, which kept getting mentioned until a few years before Disney took over. I assume several elements of that idea were worked into the getting-there Star Wars: Rebels, but there's still a massive galaxy to explore. The scope of these series really is unlimited - anything, from Knights Of The Old Republic through to the moments before The Force Awakens, is fair game. However, in keeping with what Marvel's currently doing with The Defenders, I imagine there'll be something linking the shows together, most likely a shared timeframe. That's not saying they'll have be a big crossover at the end, but don't expect the shows to run the length-and-breadth of the galaxy's history. My money's on the years between trilogies, either the rise of the Empire after the prequels or whatever's gone on in the galaxy between Return Of The Jedi and Episode VII (and given that the spin-offs are working in the former space, I'm inclined to say the latter). Expect an official confirmation to come soon, with word of a release date and what each show will entail to break soon after.
