As the Guardians Of The Galaxy central cast is set to expand with James Gunn's sequel in the next few days (tomorrow if you're lucky enough to be British, like us), news has just landed that the team wasn't supposed to be as big as it is this time out. One of the key players was meant to die in the first movie.

According to Karen Gillan, the adoptive daughter of Thanos with some severe Daddy Issues and an almost pantomime-like hatred of her sister Gamora, she was supposed to be killed off. But it turns out that James Gunn was way too fond of the character to allow her to bite the dust.

Gillan spoke to Digital Spy to confirm her character's original fate in an early draft of Guardians...

I definitely had a feeling that there was room for the character to expand in the future, but she was originally supposed to die in the first movie, I think I remember in the script. She obviously did not die, then I found out that she was coming back in the second movie and then I found out we got to explore all these amazing things about her past and her relationship with Gamora, her sister, so I was really happy.

Nebula was one of the first characters to also be confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War, so there's a very good chance he survives Vol 2 to take her Daddy Issues back to their source.

Had she been killed off, we would have been robbed of the friction with her sister that is such a key part of the second film, and we'd definitely miss that chance to see her square up to Daddy Dearest in the upcoming ensemble. There's even a rumour - based on the trajectory of the comics story - that she might have a hand in his demise.
