New Star Trek Beyond Trailer Has Major Daddy Issues

"Fear of death is illogical..."

After the first trailer for Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond left some fans cold (and others baffled at the tone and use of a motorbike), Paramount have unveiled a second that rights some of the wrongs.

The trailer has a distinct flavour - of Daddy issues and of Kirk attempting to live up to his father's iconic status through heroism - and there's very much a suggestion that this sequel will see Kirk develop from space brat to something more in William Shatner's image.

It's inevitable that this will be the Kirk show despite the big cast, and it's not the worst approach. Let's just hope all of the cast members who end up kidnapped by Idris Elba's villain aren't shunted unceremoniously into the background too much.

This feels more like Star Trek (albeit with a modern spin), and there's a better look at Elba's bad guy, which does precisely nothing to ease concerns that he's being stifled by his costume.

It's Star Trek, so it's still going to be hotly anticipated no matter what; it's just a good thing that Beyond is beginning to look a little better than that first trailer suggested.
