hoberman.jpgMartin Scorsese returns to the top of the weekend box office with the universally prasied crime drama The Departed. It's the first time Scorsese has done that for 15 years.... all the way back to Cape Fear in 1991. The movie took in an estimated $27 million but still has some way to go if it is to make back it's budget. The other big new release, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel took in an estimated $19 million which is around $10 million down on the 2003 remake. Still not a bad showing though for the low budgeted horror but with generally scathing reviews, a huge drop for next week is likely. Elsewhere then, Employee of the Month opened well coming in at 4th and although the Jackass sequel had a 56% drop, it's still been one of the big hits of the year taking in a $50 million profit after only 3 weeks! A Jackass 3 seemes inevitable. Estimated top ten for weekend of October 6-8: Title Weekend Gross Budget 1. The Departed - $27,015,000 ($27,015,00) ($90,000,000) 2. TCM: The Beginning - $19,150,000 ($19,150,000) ($16,000,000) 3. Open Season - $16,000,000 ($44,129,000) ($85,000,000) 4. Employee of the Month - $11,800,000 ($11,800,000)($12,000,000) 5. The Guardian - $9,643,000 ($32,394,000) undisclosed 6. Jackass: Number Two - $6,400,000 ($62,693,000) ($11,500,000) 7. School for Scoundrels - $3,413,000 ($13,968,000) ($35,000,000) 8.
