What It Deserved: Best Documentary

Won't You Be My Neighbour? didn't just seem like a lock for a Best Documentary nomination - it seemed certain to win outright. If there's one documentary from 2018 that people have both seen and loved, it's this, which makes its exclusion truly baffling.

What's worse, though, is that it is greatly deserving. There are some strong contenders this year, but Won't You Be My Neighbour? is the kind of film that serves as the perfect antidote to everything else going on in the world. Telling the story of Mr Rogers and his philosophies, it's an honest, heartwarming look at the life of a greatly admired public figure, but also just humanity itself.

Expertly crafted by Morgan Neville, Won't You Be My Neighbour? is a great story of a man who understood and loved kids, which is why he appealed to countless generations, and one of the importance of kindness and decency. Funny, sweet, and touching, this deserved to be right in the race as expected, not completely left behind.
