Outlaw King Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

The new historical epic from David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) landed on Netflix this weekend, and despite its fairly middling critical reception so far, the Chris Pine-starring Outlaw King is a surprisingly sturdy effort that's well worth your time.
It's important to note that many of the Rotten Tomatoes reviews are from its TIFF premiere back in September, before Mackenzie went back into the editing room and cut almost 25 minutes from the film.
According to some prominent critics, this new version of the film is a significant improvement over what audiences saw back in September, so there you go.
On its own terms as a standalone Netflix Original, Outlaw King serves up the historical intrigue, buckets of gore and cracking acting you'd hope for, even if it's certainly not on the level of the director's previous Oscar-nominated hit.
There haven't been many lavishly-produced movies for history buffs to sink their teeth into lately, in which case this effort should serve starved audiences especially well...
