Play-Doh Is Getting A Movie

Ghostbusters' Paul Feig may direct.

The success of The Lego Movie stands on two equally important pillars, I think. On the one hand, it was a cool brand already, thanks in part to years of successful movie tie-in sets and some solid video games. And on the other, it was a very good film too, full of savvy gags and an attitude that punctured any fears of being a cash-in with a mix of irreverence and heart-tugging sincerity. It can't have been easy to make that film work so well. I'm worried, then, for Jason Micallef, who is currently scripting a possible Play-Doh movie. And for Paul Feig, who Deadline say is interested in directing. They've got a tricky act to pull off, and they'll no doubt be compared to Lego while they're doing it. I mean, I'm making that comparison already. But it won't stop here. It will be the main focus of conversation, I'm sure, whether or not that's fair at all. Play-Doh seems to lend itself to some kind of stop-motion, or even specifically claymation, realisation. All of Feig's films to date have been live action, though he's going to get a lot of experience working with CG characters on Ghostbusters and he has just helped shepherd the Peanuts movie a Blue Sky. As to what a Play-Do movie might be about... well, again, the furrow already seems to have been well-ploughed by The Lego Movie. Good luck Micallef and Feig. I hope you take some risks and surprise us all.
