August is a pivotal month in the filmmaking calendar, as it signals the end of the summer, and with it goes the weekly glut of overblown, big-budget action flicks. August saw Hollywood not only dumping their end-of-summer disasters, but also serving up two of the year's best films and a couple of below-the-radar indies that nevertheless gained significant traction for good measure. From the lows of that terrible superhero reboot practically everyone hated to a laughable video game adaptation, a thoroughly mediocre horror sequel and also one of the year's most unexpectedly brilliant little thrillers, August served up plenty of big surprises both good and bad (but wasn't without a few obvious results, too).
