From the second the little yellow subordinates of Gru appeared in the first Despicable Me, it was inevitable that they'd end up with their own movie. They were immediately the most enduring brand within that film series and it is down to them that kids and family audiences have flocked to see three sequels (including this spin-off) that are nowhere near as good as the original.

The spin-off is something of a travesty, frankly, as it does little more than distilling a movie down to one appealing part and then stretching that element as thinly as possible. There's just about enough in there for kids, but after a strong opening, it starts treading water too quickly and runs out of ideas fast. In the end, instead of trying to be different from Despicable Me, it just ends up being a poor clone.
