Ranking EVERY Resident Evil Movie From Worst To Best

Resident Evil might be one of the most recognisable and beloved video game franchises, spanning 20 plus years with 24 instalments so far, but for the movie franchise, it is a very different story. Since day one, the movie adaptations have come under heavy scrutiny because simply put: A lot of them aren't very good.

These come in two flavours, with the live-action series starting off trying to retell the main games' narrative, but with later entries, director Paul W.S. Anderson and co. started ignoring what was supposed to be happening altogether. Elements and characters were still plucked from the games, but this was the story of Mila Jovovich's Alice and her struggles against the Umbrella Corporation.

Despite how they were received by the critics, all in all, the live action movies collectively grossed over one billion dollars so the might just be more popular than one might think. That, or people were just ready for more zombie flicks.

So with a potential movie reboot and a Netflix series in the works, how well do all the past instalments stack up?

The forgotten first ever attempt at taking the Resident Evil franchise and converting it to film is... probably best forgotten.

There is certainly a reason that many tenured fans don't know this exists - Biohazard 4D-Executer never received a release outside of Japan.

Digital Amuse designed special cylindrical seats for the full horror experience - one that would shake viewers and blow air at them, much like the D-Box options we have today. Biohazard 4D-Executer was eventually cut down to a 20-minute version due to graphic content, which meant many scenes were left out, and pacing is all over the place.

Now at first, this might seem like an unofficial film, but Biohazard 4D-Executer was indeed created under the supervision of Capcom with former Production Studio 2 game designer and producer Keiji Inafune and flagship co-founder Noboru Sugimura being charge with these roles. Inafune referred to this as a "Gaiden" (side story) for fans of the Resident Evil series.

However, there is much Resident Evil here at all apart from the Racoon City setting and Umbrella logos occasionally appearing throughout. Unlike the rest of the CGI films in this list, Biohazard 4D-Executer doesn't hold up, and looks like an outdated PlayStation 1 cutscene.
