Ranking January 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

The best and worst movies from the "graveyard month" of cinema.

Aside from awards fare expanding from limited to wide release, January is always referred to by critics and film buffs as the "graveyard month" for cinema. It's when studios dump all their waste, the pictures they know suck and will just quietly disappear amid the Oscar conversation to be never spoken of again. That said, this year has been as good as any other for proving that it's also a great time for studios to counter-program against all this awfulness, by releasing great movies with very little direct competition to speak of. When you're up against lame action sequels and Johnny Depp movies even his loyal fanbase can't stomach, smart and diverting fare actually has a half-way decent chance of winning an audience. This list focuses largely on movies out on wide release in both the US and the UK, with a few exceptions being made for limited movies that are in the Oscar conversation. Like most Januarys, this hasn't exactly been one to remember on the whole, but there were a few films that lessened the pain somewhat, and actually made going to the cinema worthwhile. Without any further ado, here are January 2015's new cinematic releases ranked from worst to best...
