Ranking May 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

Alice in... Blunderland?

Alice Through The Looking Glass X Men Apocalypse The Nice Guys
Disney, Fox & Warner Bros.

As we lurch into full-on blockbuster season, the studios have well and truly let their big guns loose, with superhero fare, blockbuster sequels (that we possibly never asked for) and unlikely comedy follow-ups flooding multiplexes worldwide.

That's not to ignore the litany of indie fare, both prestigious and terrible, that has hit screens both big and small this past month, with lower-key films effortlessly out-classing the big-hitters this time. However, "uneven" is probably the best descriptor for this past month's films, really.

As for what June holds? Brace yourself for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Warcraft (both of which have been widely panned in their early international releases), The Conjuring 2, Now You See Me 2, Independence Day: Resurgence, Central Intelligence. Finding Dory and much, much more. Hold on tight.

Whatever the future holds, here are May 2016's movies ranked from worst to best...

19. The Darkness

Alice Through The Looking Glass X Men Apocalypse The Nice Guys
Universal

RottenTomatoes Score: 5% (2.4/10 average score)

Box Office: Another modest, low-budget success from the Blumhouse stable, The Darkness cost just $4 million and has grossed more than $10 million to date.

Verdict: The latest horror vehicle from Wolf Creek's Greg McLean is a depressingly cliched PG-13 snooze-fest, trotting out just about every genre trope in the book while utterly wasting leads Radha Mitchell and Kevin Bacon.

Only the youngest, meekest audiences need apply, as everyone else will get fed up with the recycled jump scares and excessive exposition by the half-hour mark.

That any major star could be attracted to this project is utterly mind-bogging, as they clearly didn't even get a fat payday out of it. Not only May's worst, but one of the year's most execrable theatrical releases to date.
