Box Office: One of the year's most surprising box office flops, this Dragon Tattoo reboot-quel had a sensibly mid-range $43 million budget - less than half the cost of David Fincher's 2011 movie - yet has only just passed the $30 million mark worldwide. A dud, and one which kills any prospect of a rejuvenated franchise.
Verdict: Claire Foy certainly gives it her all in the Lisbeth Salander role, but due to a painfully generic script, neither her nor solid director Fede Álvarez can make this anything more than a formulaic, forgettable and oddly tame crime thriller.
At once silly and boring while also wasting a talented supporting cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks and Vicky Krieps, this is a bungled attempt to shock the franchise back to life. Inevitably, we'll get another attempt within the next decade.
