Slow opening for Grindhouse & No Vega Brothers movie

grindhouse-poster-2.jpgWe all knew Grindhouse was a gamble, we've been saying it for some time now. Releasing two violent R-Rated movies over the Easter weekend with a combined running time of over three hours and promoted as being a homage to a type of cinema that most people won't know.... was always a risk as to whether it would attract an audience. Early reports show, it has failed to attract that audience. On it's first day of wide release, the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature only managed to take in a measly $5 million, leaving it at fourth place with Blades of Glory still dominating, taking in $9 million to keep it's spot at first place. This is all despite Grindhouse being better reviewed by critics than 300, having a bigger name cast and director and easily having just as big a marketing campaign. Remember, the movie was made for $55 million and the usual consensus is a movie needs to make just over half it's budget on the first weekend of release to make a return. There ain't no way this movie is going to make anywhere near $25 million this weekend with that opening. In other news..... we reported a while ago now that Michael Madsen claimed Quentin Tarantino was mulling over the idea of shooting a Vega Brothers film which would revolve around John Travolta's character from Pulp Fiction and Madsen's character in Reservoir Dogs.... who Tarantino perceives in his universe to be brothers. Tarantino said this....
€œIt was called Double V Vega. It actually would have taken place during the time Vincent was in Amsterdam, when he was running one of Marcellus€™ clubs in Amsterdam. And Vic goes to visit him. €œBut we€™re a little older now, and since they are both - it would have to be a prequel... I actually came up with a way I could have done it, even being older and dead where they all had older brothers and both of their brothers got together because the two guys died. And they wanted revenge or something like that. But now, they are too old for that. I got to say, it€™s kind of unlikely now.€
I think it was pretty obvious that once this century began.... this movie was always going to be off the cards. It's a shame, for some reason I believe Travolta and Madsen would have fantastic chemistry together.... and I don't think either actor has looked as comfortable a performer as they did in those two movies. It's Madsen that has to be most bummed with this news though... you could tell in his interviews he was dying for this movie to happen. The current Orange mobile phone adverts that play before every movie in this country at the moment, just goes to show how even to this day he is struggling to move away from his magnificent turn as Mr. Blonde. But.... if Inglorious Bastards goes ahead, we already know he's gonna be in that so as one opportunity dies.... another might just blossom for him. source - dark horizons, moviehole, slash film
