The world is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and a return of Tom Holland's big-screen take on the titular webslinger.

That, however, isn't the only Spidey film in the works. While Sony have teamed up with Marvel for Homecoming, they're still swinging solo with the character as well, and that includes an animated Spider-Man movie expected to hit next year.

Now we've got some firm casting news, with Shameik Moore - a breakout star from indie-hit Dope and Netflix's The Get Down - signed on to play the Miles Morales version of the hero (via THR).

As well as juggling his high-school life, he'll be battling Liev Schreiber in the film, with the former X-Men star cast as the main, currently unknown villain.

Few other details are known, but the project is being written by Phil Lord (he of LEGO Movie and Jump Street fame), and he's also producing alongside regular partner Chris Miller. Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince) is co-directing along with Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians).

Miles Morales has been hugely popular since his introduction back in 2011, including an animated series - Ultimate Spider-Man - where he was voiced by Donald Glover (who is now in Homecoming, albeit not as Morales).

The film is scheduled for release on December 21, 2018 (the same date as Aquaman, as it happens). Sony are also planning further non-MCU Spideyverse movies, including Venom and a possible Black Cat/Silver Sable film.
