Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home is in the rear-view mirror for the vast majority of fans, the filmmakers are free to publicly discuss its many big surprises, which must feel like lifting a double-decker-bus-sized weight off their shoulders.

Especially for the notoriously spoilerific Tom Holland, who no longer has to worry about slipping up in interviews. That is, until he has to run the media circuit all over again for his next Spidey outing. Poor Tom.

Anyway, speaking of spoilers, No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have recently given extensive interviews to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, going in-depth on some of the creative decisions that led to the finished movie, explaining the ending, and also touching on Spidey's cinematic future.

How exactly does Doctor Strange's spell work? Why was that mid-credits scene character not used in the rest of the movie? How did those secret stars contribute to the story? How does No Way Home connect to Doctor Strange 2?

Well... let's see what McKenna and Sommers have to say!

13. The Multiverse Plot Was Originally Going To Be Used In The NEXT Movie

Outing Spidey's identity at the end of Far From Home was such a monumental story beat that you'd assume the creative team had a firm plan for what comes next.

But as it turns out, they didn't. It wasn't until late 2019 - shortly after Sony and Disney/Marvel agreed to continue sharing Spider-Man - that McKenna and Sommers sat down and decided what to do with Peter's newfound fame:

"Once Sony and Marvel hammered everything out, we were like, 'OK, we’ve got the team back together. What are we doing now with this giant reveal?'"

This led them to the idea that Peter could make some sort of wish to reclaim his secret identity, which led them to Doctor Strange, which then led them to the multiverse, and the idea of bringing back older Spider-Man actors.

In fact, the idea of using multiverse Spidey villains was originally going to be reserved for a future movie, one that No Way Home's post-credits tag would tease. However, Marvel Studios head-honcho Kevin Feige then suggested that they should just use that concept for No Way Home instead, leading to the film's multiverse plot.
