Sony's Movie Spider-Verse (Spidey Cinematic Universe?) is beginning to take shape with the announcements that Venom and a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie are both incoming (but not linked to the MCU), and some more details have now dropped on the former.

According to Collider, the Venom stand-alone - which is set for release on October 5th 2018 - will be R-Rated, which is as good as hearing that it's probably going to be a horror/sci-fi blend, and that it will launch an alternate shared universe of movies.

Apparently, Sony want to take a leaf out of Fox's book and follow the model established by their releases of Logan and Deadpool for distinctly different strands of the X-Men franchise. As long as we get a Venom vs Carnage movie at some point, I'm game.

Meanwhile, Tom Holland spoke to Variety about the spin-offs and the possibility of him joining in:

"I have no idea. I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material."

So that's not a no, then.

The Venom spin-off arguably doesn't need Spider-Man at all, as he'd be too much of a starry distraction, but it would be a good boost for Black Cat and Silver Sable, given that they don't have the luxury of another genre to explain the distance from the character they're spinning off from.

But who knows, if Sony genuinely want to follow the Deadpool/Logan model, Tom Holland's Spider-Man wouldn't be part of those films at all. But maybe Miles Morales could be?
