Star Trek Beyond Trailer Debuts With Star Wars: The Force Awakens

George Lucas to dress in a Starfleet uniform and hand out flyers... Just kidding.

In a bold move (where no man has gone before, you might say), Paramount Pictures have paid for a trailer spot in front Star Wars: The Force Awakens to advertise their upcoming Star Trek Beyond, the third in the rebooted franchise. THR broke the news, also making the fair point that this shouldn't be seen as a surprise, considering the fact that JJ Abrams' Bad Robot production company is responsible for the latest spate of Star Trek films. It could even be read as a mea culpa to Paramount from Abrams; an olive branch that says 'sorry I ditched you for Star Wars, but you can air your Star Trek trailer in front of it if you want'. What's nice is that after all these decades of Trek v Wars rivalry, these two sci-fi juggernauts can actually come together to give each other a boost. Of course, on the studio side of things this is all a bean-counting move, as Disney are going to walk away with a big bag of dosh and Paramount are going to reach the widest possible target demographic for their troubles, guaranteed. At the very least, fans who come out of The Force Awakens feeling disappointed are going to be thinking to themselves 'well, at least there's Star Trek Beyond next year.' Star Trek Beyond is released on 22 July 2016, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in two weeks. Don't act like you didn't know.
