Star Trek Into Darkness Preview Footage: 5 Things We Learnt

4. The Script

stid-t1-15-tt One of the biggest criticisms of Star Trek 2009 was the script, and sadly it looks like that Into Darkness will have the same problem. Cheese and cringe-worthy don€™t come close as Kirk shouts €˜€™Spock, we€™re talking about your life!€™€™ in the best daytime soap-opera fashion while his first officer sits inside the volcano. And Spock blurts out lines like €˜€™the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few€™€™ so that we all know that the writers have seen Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan at least once. For example, in order to get across that Spock is intelligent, they put in references to his €˜€™super IQ€™€™ and that €˜€™no one knows the rules better than ,€™€™ there is no flair, no attempt to be imaginative or exciting. If anything it just seems amateurish or that they have no faith in the audience to follow what is going on unless every action is explained in a patronising way, in the same way they do in cartoons. But this is now dumbed down Star Trek and the script reflects that. The focus is not on giving you food for thought with a clever script, it€™s to dazzle you with the special effects and Red Bull infused action, nothing more.
