Star Trek: Ranking The Movies From Best To Worst

11. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

star trek motion picture While this film is appreciated by some (myself included) the majority of viewers despise this film. And it isn't a case of "oh, they just don't understand it"... this movie is very slow-paced, and I will admit unnecessarily long at parts, which leads to most disliking it. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is of course the first entry into the Star Trek film franchise, and tells the story of a mysterious alien cloud approaching Earth, destroying everything in its path. James T. Kirk, now an admiral, is reassigned to command the Enterprise and investigate. The film is notable for the budget spiraling out of control, eventually becoming one of the most expensive films ever made up to that point (its final cost was about $46 million. The most expensive movie at the time was Superman, which had cost $55 million). The Good: That money was well spent. The visuals are beautiful, and are on par with the then-newly-released Star Wars (which the movie is clearly trying to capitalize on). The Bad: The pacing is very slow, especially for science fiction fans who automatically associate the genre with action. The Ugly: Spock's baby-blue onesie. Seriously, we won't have better clothing designers than that in the future?
