Star Trek XI is next year's christmas present!

new-enterprise.jpgJ.J. Abrams' re-imaging of the Star Trek franchise, has got itself a strange release date..... Christmas Day 2008. The film will apparently begin filming in the fall. Alex Kurtman & Robert Orci have wrote the movie's script which we have to presume is nearly finished or already in the can. They wrote the Mission Impossible III script, which Abrams directed as his first feature film. This is what Abrams told the site... "If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen.......Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone -- life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek." Wow, Abrams has sure changed his tune. Back in August, he said this.... €œTrek fans were not able to keep the last show (Enterprise) on the air and we are looking on bringing over Alias and Lost fans. And if the old Trekkies like the new movie, great €” if not, too bad. We have to boldly go where no Star Trek has gone before.€ Have Paramount and the guys in charge of Star Trek told Abrams and his writing crew not to deviate too much from the show's long history? Granted, his comments aren't that much different from what he said in August, but they do indicate to the guy trying to cater more to the Trekkies than he previously first said. Christmas Day, really? You would really have to be a hardcore Trekkie to go and see the movie on the 25th December. I'm guessing the release date is going to be the Christmas weekend rather than the actual day itself, and that's fine with me. What I want for Christmas next year is a Star Trek that moves the series forward in a new direction along with respecting the original show's franchise in terms of atmosphere, plot and cast. From these recent quotes, it sounds like Abrams now wants to do the same thing..... let's hope so.
