A whole new Star Wars trilogy is on its way. Not Episode X and a continuation of the Skywalker saga, but something completely different, all spearheaded by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson.
Not only that, but a *live-action* Star Wars TV show is happening as well (maybe for real, this time). The double-whammy of announcements came last night amid a flurry of updates from Disney CEO Bob Iger, but it's the Star Wars news that stands out. The new trilogy may come to a close in 2019, but Disney and Lucasfilm were always going to make more beyond that, and this gives us a better look at their plans.
Not much is known about either project, beyond the statement that Johnson's trilogy of movies will focus on "new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." That itself is open to interpretation, but it's exciting nonetheless. And, with three new films, and at least one season of a TV show now actively being planned, there's a heck of a lot to speculate on about where in the galaxy we might go next.
