Star Wars Episode 7: 10 Reasons J.J. Abrams Will Ruin It

8. He's Too Obsessed With Mystery

J.J. Abrams really grew to prominence when he created the hit show Lost, which became an overnight sensation and the definitive "water cooler" show for most of its run. The first season was outstanding in how it crafted a thrilling mystery that just built and built, leaving us wanting more every episode. By Season 2, many fans grew vocal, concerned that the writers had written themselves into a corner and were essentially just making things up as they went along, though Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse were quick to try and dispel our fears. It all turned out to be bunk, though; the various mysteries - the polar bear, the black smoke, the interplay of light and dark on the island, the four-toed statue, the Others, the reason for the crash, the numbers - didn't have particularly satisfying resolutions for the most part, ensuring that a nice idea just couldn't live up to its huge potential. Why this is worrying for Star Wars is that the series was never about a particular mystery; it is more about approaching a mysterious setting and using that to explore the characters therein. Abrams can't resist but prod away at mysteries in practically all of his works (except, funnily enough, Star Trek), and so it's possible he might try and scratch that itch once again. The only solace: he resisted for Star Trek, and the superb Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) is writing the script.
