Star Wars: KOTOR Movie In The Works, But NOT From Benioff & Weiss

Avatar's Laeta Kalogridis is reportedly penning the script for the Old Republic movie.

Another name can be added to the growing pile of Star Wars movies reportedly in the works, with Lucasfilm and Disney said to be developing a Knights of the Old Republic movie with Avatar screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis.

BuzzFeed News reports the Kalogridis was hired in spring 2018 to develop the property for Lucasfilm, and that she is close to finishing the script for the first movie in what could be a potential trilogy. Lucasfilm and Disney didn't offer comment, but the outlet notes they have had confirmation from three different sources about the project.

The news comes at a time of uncertainty for the franchise. The Rise of Skywalker will be released in December, and brings to a close the nine-movie arc defined as the Skywalker Saga, with no further Episodes currently planned beyond that. Disney have two trilogies confirmed to be in the works beyond that: one from The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson, and the other from Game of Thrones' David Benioff & D.B. Weiss.

It's the latter whose trilogy will begin first, with the initial instalment currently scheduled for release on 16 December, 2022. Further release dates are staked out for 2024 and 2026, though it's unclear if these will all be from Benioff & Weiss, or if Johnson's trilogy will be in there as well.

It had previously been rumoured that Benioff & Weiss' trilogy would be set during the Old Republic era, but BuzzFeed state that whatever they're working on is separate to Kalogridis' movie. It's unclear when that would then release, given it'd mean Disney have at least 7 movies in the works with only three release dates pencilled in, but Making Star Wars report that several sources informed them they didn't believe the schedule was complete, so there is scope for things to change on that front.

Either way, a KOTOR movie seems very likely to happen in some form, especially after Kathleen Kennedy said back at Star Wars Celebration it was something they were looking at. It makes sense for Lucasfilm too: the video games and general mythology behind it are beloved by fans, and it's long been cited as one of the most desired stories to see on the big screen. Hopefully, whether it's Benioff & Weiss or Kalogridis, they can get it right.
