The somewhat anti-climactic duel between Obi-Wan and Vader in Episode IV is often touted by many fans as the worst lightsaber fight in history. However, in 1978, it blew a lot of minds. The movie's strong mix of sound, special effects, and imagery had birthed an instant classic. Compared to every other duel in the saga, this first showdown may seem rather dull, but can you really place a price on nostalgia? Well... maybe. George Lucas' original concept for the lightsaber was supposed to be more like the traditional longsword, heavy and slow. Given the production's troubled history it's more likely he just didn't have time to workout better fight choreography.
