Star Wars Spin Off Gareth Edwards must be pinching himself right now. In just a few short years he has gone from indie darling to the director of one the cinema's biggest blockbusters. As if going from Monsters to Godzilla wasn't a big enough leap, now he's going to a galaxy far, far away to direct an entry in one of the most popular franchises of all time too. It's nice seeing a man of humble beginnings being rewarded for all his hard work, and many of his early fans are very happy for him. Godzilla proved that Edwards has what it takes to manage a large scale production of a highly anticipated film, and clearly Disney saw this and wanted to capitalise on his talents. Watching Godzilla, it's not difficult to see why they chose him either. The film is structured like an old school blockbuster with an eye towards visuals and atmosphere. The overall direction is solid throughout, and the performances from the actors never fall on the bad side of things. As the sophomore outing for a director relatively inexperienced with this type of big budget filmmaking, Godzilla is largely successful. That being said, it does have its fair share of flaws.
