Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Major Plot Theories You Need To Know

7. Why Rey Could Beat Kylo

Okay, so I can't explain the Jedi mind trick scene, but another point of contention from fans is quite how Rey could've beaten Kylo in saber-to-saber combat, when one of them is a fully-trained Jedi and the other is 'just a scavenger'. Well, for one - the former isn't. In fact, we barely know anything about how long Ren was under the tutelage of Luke, and his amateur approach to learning the ways of the Force is exemplified in both Snoke's comment about how he needs to "finish his training" and in the primitive, experimental look of his own lightsaber. Back to the battle though, as factoring these things in, Kylo has most likely never been tested in real combat. Instead, he broke away from Luke and only gained a position in the First Order through fear and a demonstration of power alone. Fighting Finn and Rey is the first time he's ever had to think on his feet, which when you couple it with the emotional weight of killing Han, getting shot in the gut by Chewie and going up against a scavenger that's fought to stay alive for almost her entire life, makes Rey's victory far more plausible and believable.
