Something big is coming to the Star Wars universe in The Last Jedi. Something on a scale that is unprecedented even in a grand, emotional space opera that has so far seen planetary-scale genocide, father reveals and secret twins and enough twists to make M Night Shyamalan envious. If new claims are to be believed, none of that compares to the punch packed in Rian Johnson's sequel.
According to two key lines from a surprisingly descriptive Japanese poster for the film (as translated by Star Wars News) The Last Jedi will boast the biggest twist in the franchise history:
The Most Shocking Truth In Star Wars History Will Soon Be Revealed... Be ready for the shocking truth surpassing the previous stories!
Now that's a pretty heady claim. The Empire Strikes Back's "No, I am your father" is basically the bench-mark for cinematic narrative twists, passing right through cliche to be a trope-setter that is frequently held up as the waterline. It will forever be the pillar that all twists are judged against (alongside it was Earth all along and Bruce Willis is dead), so for The Last Jedi to claim it has been surpassed was bound to inspire some pretty emotive responses.
Inevitably the conversation now turns to what that claim could mean for the film's plot, with every rumour attached to it - and every half-developed speculation turned back to once more for evaluation. And in amongst those suggestions there are some twists that could genuinely happen.
Whether they'd all be bigger than Empire's twist remains to be seen, but it's an interesting thing to consider...
