10. It's Not Just A Repeat Of Empire

With The Force Awakens liberally lifting a lot of plot points and tropes from A New Hope, fans were justifiably worried that The Last Jedi would just lazily crib its shell plot from The Empire Strikes Back, but this mercifully isn't the case at all.

Yes, there are individual images and action beats that clearly homage Empire, but overall the narrative sets off on its own path, toying with audiences expecting a repeat of Empire and then intentionally venturing in another direction.

Sure, it's a much darker film than The Force Awakens just as Empire is to A New Hope, but it's clear that Rian Johnson didn't want to just deliver a nostalgia-fueled victory lap that echoed the series' best movie, much easier though that would've been.
