8. Can Kylo Ren Be Redeemed?

Is there any coming back to the light after killing one of the most iconic and beloved Star Wars characters of all time? This is the question surrounding Kylo Ren that Star Wars fans have been pondering since he stuck that Lightsaber in Han Solo.

The Last Jedi trailers suggest that Adam Driver's character will still be wracked by inner turmoil in the sequel, this time when his shadowy mentor Snoke orders him to slay his other parent, Leia, as part of his mission to "kill the past".

If Kylo goes through with this - and he might well do considering Star War sadly must write the late Carrie Fisher out somehow - redemption will be much harder to come by. Could the audience ever really root for somebody who has killed both his parents, and fan-favourite original trilogy characters to boot?

Once again, The Last Jedi's moral shades of grey must be taken into account, because just as Rey is being pulled towards darkness, Kylo appears to being pulled towards the light, at least to the extent where his evil decisions are agonising ones.

While there's still conflict in him, there's still a chance his character arc could mirror that of his grandfather, Darth Vader, and eventually find him neck-deep in redemptive waters. Perhaps all it would take for that to happen is a ghostly visit from Anakin Skywalker, something that has been rumoured for a while.

Alternately, Rey could be the key to Kylo fulfilling his destiny in the grey centre of the Force, and vice verse. Maybe both characters will end up embracing the light and darkness within themselves, compensate for each other's weaknesses, and become all the more powerful for it.
