As well as making the film's title wholly more appropriate, Luke Skywalker's proclamation that it's time for the Jedi to end is sure to shake the Star Wars franchise to its very foundations and turn the saga on its head.

He confirmed his intentions in the trailers but stopped short of explaining his motivation for them, which begs the question of why the order of galactic knights has finally run its course.

There are several reasons why Luke might want to disband the Jedi after his long, brooding isolation on Ahch-To, and you can bet it has something to do with an idea George Lucas tabled in the divisive prequel trilogy: the balance of the Force.

Luke says he has discovered that there is "more" to the Force than just its light and dark poles, which suggests he plans to replace the Jedi with something different, a new breed of Force users who draw their power from both ends of the spectrum, what many like to refer to as Grey Jedi.

Maybe the Jedi's dogmatic ideology was destined only to keep them at perpetual war with Dark Side subscribers, and Luke's realised this. It makes sense that the balancing of the Force refers to uniting its two sides, rather than obliterating one of them.

Kylo Ren and Rey both have good and evil lurking within them, which makes them prime candidates for a Grey Jedi order, providing Luke can convince his nephew to stop wiping out his family.
