Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker - 10 Reasons To Be Worried

9. Retconning The Last Jedi

Remember how Kylo Ren destroyed his helmet in The Last Jedi and now he's having it fixed in The Rise of Skywalker? That's a good analogy for J.J. Abrams trying to "fix" the franchise after that film, possibly retconning it.

To be clear, The Last Jedi is not a good film. It's not the worst Star Wars film, but it's a mediocre effort that has a good, perhaps even great 90-minute or so film trapped in a 150-minute runtime with pointless subplots (hey there, Canto Bight), some really dumb moments and questionable creative decisions from writer/director Rian Johnson.

That said, the film is part of the canon whether you like it or not, and retconning some of the most controversial moments - i.e., Rey's parentage reveal - would only be a disservice to the narrative overall.

The reveal that Rey's parents were nobodies may not have been satisfactory for some fans, but it was a shocking moment and great for Rey's character development. It was a bold decision, so retconning that and revealing she's a Skywalker or a Kenobi would only come off as cowardly and desperate to please fans.
