Star Wars VII: Essential Characters And Who Should Play Them – PART II

1. Charlize Theron - Lumiya

Who: We€™re on the first entry of this week€™s fantasy casting and I€™m already breaking my rule for source material a few sentences later. Lumiya may also be one of the oldest EU characters in any of these articles. Her origins go back to the Marvel days (Marvel, Disney€interesting) when they used to do Star Wars comic books back in the 1980s. Dark Horse would take over the rights for publishing anything in regards to a galaxy far, far away in the comic book world. As a side note, it will be interesting to see if Marvel will transition back into producing Star Wars comic book material. Lumiya€™s origins center on her being a Force sensitive Imperial plant within the Rebel Alliance after the events of A New Hope. Her target would be Luke Skywalker and her mission would be to either kill him or discredit him within the Rebel Alliance. Lumiya would ultimately suffer a terrible accident which would leave her brutally disfigured and crippled. After her accident, Darth Vader would recover what was left of her body and save her via similar cybernetic enhancements much like the ones he himself had. Lumiya would disappear for a number of years until her re-emergence during the Second Galactic Civil War. She would play a pivotal role in the reemergence of the Sith known as the One Sith Order. She would also have many interactions with other well-known villains throughout the span of the EU. Lumiya would fit perfectly and is almost critical to a timeline 30-years after Return of the Jedi because of her Sith ties and potential for a backstory involving both Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Actress: When I think of Lumiya I picture a character that is the embodiment of evil. Lumiya€™s path is one that is similar to Mara Jade€™s with the exception that Mara Jade was more of an inherently good person where Lumiya was much more dark. The reasoning behind choosing Charlize Theron for this role is because of her ability to play a wide range of characters. She is great at playing devious yet brilliant characters with a dark agenda. Lumiya is sneaky and maniacal because she seeks to destroy the Skywalker family. Ultimately Lumiya is a servant and a tool for a greater purpose much like her role in Prometheus as Meredith Vickers. I think with the introduction of Lumiya, it would also open up great opportunities for potential flashback moments in which Theron could play the younger version of the character before her accident. Besides, Theron is a fangirl whether we admit it or not and it would be great to see her play this dark role. It€™s high time Star Wars had a dark female villain and Lumiya is that character.
