Suicide Squad Cast Responds To Critical Mauling

It's all about the fans, not Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently.

During the European Premiere for Suicide Squad, Reuters asked the cast how they felt about the critical response to the film.

The most vocal of the talent appears to have been Cara Delevingne, who said that "the critics have been absolutely horrific, they're really, really horrible. You know, I just don't think they like superhero movies." She also added that while "this movie isn't perfect," it was made for the fans.

That old chestnut.

Will Smith made similar noises...

"I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I'm excited for the fans to get to vote."

And director David Ayer added, "I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies."

This may come as news to Delevingne, but the data does not support her theory that critics generally do not care for superhero films. Critics, for example, had little issue with Deadpool and Captain America: Civil War earlier this year.

The rest of the cast and director David Ayer made the smarter PR play. They made Suicide Squad for the fans, so those are the opinions they care about. Most DC fans are pretty much guaranteed to like the movie, so what it really comes down to is what general audiences think about the film.

Warner Bros. is counting on a better CinemaScore than the "B" Batman v Superman received in its exit polls. An "A-" or better would go a long way in backing up what the cast said at last night's premiere and giving the studio an argument that critics were out of touch on Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad has a better chance at being a crowd pleaser than Batman v Superman. It is more fun and has a few more laughs, which can help audiences be more forgiving of its flaws than critics have been. Do not be surprised if average moviegoers ignore or disagree with critics on this one.
