Suicide Squad Currently Creating More Buzz Than Star Wars: Rogue One

Round one to Warner Bros?

Shots fired - Warner Bros are beating Disney in the buzz stakes.

Despite the fact that it doesn't hit cinemas until August, Suicide Squad is currently the most discussed movie on social media platforms. It's outpacing the new Star Trek (despite a new trailer landing) and Ghostbusters (we all know how much THAT has been talked about), even though they're both out shortly.

More valuably for DC fanboys looking for ammunition to crow, Suicide Squad is also outperforming "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," currently. That much partly goes without saying: Suicide Squad is currently in the final throws of an aggressive pre-release marketing campaign. We're now at the point where they're hyping music video appearances and toy lines, whereas Rogue One has a solitary trailer and the toxic weight of wrong readings of its reshoots weighing it down. Its time will come.

More tangibly, the film was mentioned 66,000 times during the week of June 17th to June 23rd, which is more than 150% than Ghostbusters and 300% more than Star Trek Beyond. It also grossly outperformed the BFG - coming in July - and The Legend Of Tarzan. So that's a good indication it's going to win the summer box office race.

That much will be music to the ears of Warner Bros who need the off-kilter spin-off to be a hit (not least because it's rumoured to be the launching point for a sequel and a Harley Quinn inspired Birds Of Prey movie.) Let's just hope the product matches the buzz...
