The Batman: 7 Reasons George Miller Must Replace Ben Affleck

5. He Can Do Heart, Humour AND Horror

The Batman George Miller
Miramax

The most curious thing about Miller's body of work is how wildly different some of his most successful films are: sure, he's most famous for Mad Max and all of the spectacle, insanity and weirdness involved there, but he also made a Babe sequel and two Happy Feet movies. Yep, the same guy who then went back to Fury Road made movies about a big-hearted talking pig and a dancing ecology warrior penguin.

More importantly, it's the director's range that should be most celebrated. He transitioned from a world of grotesque monsters to family friendly, universally appealing stories. He has the capacity to segue from horrific content to heart-warming, humanist emotion, and that's something the DCEU is missing.

So far we've seen muscular directing from helmers without a great deal of range: sure, Snyder knows how to make visually stunning films and David Ayer knows impact, but could either have made Babe In The City? Let me rephrase that - could either really handle subtle emotional nuance? Doubtful.

And for all of Batman's impact, he's all about subtlety and emotion - they're the keys to understanding his identity, rather than simply accepting it, and they need a director who can work on a broad spectrum.
