The Death Of Superman Review: 5 Ups & 6 Downs

5. The Tone Is All Over The Place

Also like many other DC animated films, the tone here is all over the place, and director Sam Liu once again demonstrates that he lacks the ability to nimbly switch gears between light and dark.

This is a film where people are brutally murdered on-screen and characters drop light profanity, but it's also a movie where a character called Bibbo Bibbowski goofs around, and The Flash (Christopher Gorham) drops quips clearly aimed at younger audiences.

Neither Liu nor the movie as a whole are able to fully reconcile these two moods into a fully coherent whole, and as such viewers will find themselves pushed and pulled between them at a mere moment's notice.

While not all audiences will be able to verbalise quite what feels "off" about the movie in these terms, they'll probably recognise it regardless. The lack of tonal consistency is once again frustrating, if not remotely surprising.
