The Good Dinosaur: 22 Easter Eggs & References You Probably Missed

20. The Claw Tooth Mountain Faces

The dinosaurs' farm lies in the shadow of three distinctive mountains that become Arlo's beacon to help on his journey home. That in itself (along with some familiar musical cues and the whole adventure road trip element) feels very Lord Of The Ring-like, but there's something even more specific. If you look closely at the mountains (after their transformation from the concept art above) they have distinct face like markings, as if they belong to the same universe as Inside Out's short film Lava. And this is what the mountains actually look like in the film, complete with the same personified characteristics as the Lava star...
It's too much of a coincidence for that not to be a conscious choice. Obviously, they aren't active, but as we know from Lava, Pixar aren't afraid of killing everything including gigantic mountains, so these ones are probably dead or something. Because everything dies and eventually you'll be alone and sad, watching Pixar films that turn you into some sort of raisin.
