Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Reactions: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

It's always nice to get a surprise as a comic book movie fan. Typically, a teaser trailer is preceded by days of speculation as to the exact airing time, or marketing around a special appearance on a late night talk show. Or there are those awful teasers for teasers that everyone seems to appreciate so much.

So the silent drop of Thor: Ragnarok's first trailer was a very welcome break from the norm. It recaptured that rapturous feeling of being rewarded for nothing, and by the hammer of the Gods did it deliver. It looks like Taika Waititi and Marvel have made a glorious mash-up that is part a continuation of the director's quirky work (albeit injected with mighty financial steroids), part 80s sci-fi and part full-blooded MCU spectacle. In short, it's another tick for the Marvel marketing machine.

There's a lot in there for such a short teaser, but it never feels like we're being force-fed too much information: we get to see some of Hela's powers, something of Thor's dynamic with Valkyrie and hints of the tone that Waititi was so evidently hired for. And none of it comes at the cost of infuriating spoilers or super-marketable shots that patently will not make the final cut.

But, as ever, it wasn't entirely flawless, with a couple of niggling issues that must be reported on just as much as the trumpeting hype.
