It seems that Terminator 5 is slamming into gear very quickly; it's been just a few short months since a new trilogy of movies was announced, with the Terminator reboot kicking off on June 26th, 2015.
Variety is claiming that after considering directors of the caliber of Ang Lee, Rian Johnson and Denis Villeneuve, it is Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World) who has landed the gig. In addition to this, the report states that the deal with Arnold Schwarzenegger has yet to be worked out, but if Paramount have any sense whatsoever, they will be quickly cobbling it together now that a director has seemingly been locked in. Though there has been creative friction on the Thor set - Taylor bumped heads with Marvel over the film's runtime - he has proven himself a fine director on a number of classic shows, including Oz, Homicide: Life on the Street, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Deadwood, Lost, Rome, Big Love, The Sopranos and Mad Men, which if nothing else screams a director in absolute control of what he is doing (regardless of what Marvel might think). Still, the fracas can't be too loud, otherwise Paramount wouldn't be preparing to hand over a (probable) $200 million tentpole movie to him. But now that a director has been appointed, what about the story and casting? It's been
widely rumoured that Dwayne Johnson is being considered for the role of The Terminator in this film - despite Arnie's claims that he's 100% playing a machine - and that the narrative might be set shortly after WW2, with a machine being sent back through time to take aim at Sarah Connor's parents. The proposed idea would explain why the T-800 resembles Arnie in the first place (apparently his human counterpart, who we would meet in the film, was a tenacious fighter), and could even end with the death of the Connors, creating a parallel timeline, much like J.J. Abrams did so successfully with Star Trek. What do you make of this choice? For me it provides some hope that, though first choice Justin Lin didn't end up directing the movie, it's at least in competent hands, even if Taylor's blockbuster experience is to this point sight unseen.
