Top 10 Film Scenes of White People Dancing to Black Music

2. Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZWwPaamC-s As far as teen movies go, this scene is a classic: Julia Stiles freak dancing on top of a table to Biggie Smalls' "Hypnotize" in the film 10 Things I Hate About You. By itself, it's merely a great scene in a cult classic teen flick from the 90's. 10 Things is a film adaptation of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew set in a modern 90's high school in Seattle. The movie finds its worth in its smartly written script and cast of brilliant young talent on the verge of stardom (and immortality). The movie finds its cultural resonance in the table dance Stiles' character Kat Stafford performs at a party. What you see is not just a drunk white girl gyrating on a table, but the cultures of white suburbia and black urbanity, which had been circling each other throughout the 90's, finally meeting triumphantly onscreen. When music scholars look back to trace the evolution of Hip Hop from its gangsta niche roots to one of the foremost cultural forces in the Western world, they must take into account what happened when Julia met Biggie. The cultural effects of what occurred in this film almost makes Save the Last Dance seem irrelevant.

Raymond Woods is too busy watching movies to give you a decent bio. If he wasn't too busy watching movies and reading books about movies and listening to podcasts about movies, this is what he'd tell you. "I know more about film than you. Accept this as a fact and we might be able to talk."
